Meet Julie Larkin
How did you get to where you are now?
Whew! Girl Talk has been such a winding journey. It started in response to a need for college women to feel supported in their struggles, rather than isolated. Then we started speaking about dignity and self-worth to high school and middle school girls, and now we’re even creating a Mom’s Program! Along the way, I’ve tried out lots of ideas that never took shape, or others that we attempted and failed. I’m very grateful for the lessons learned, incredible mentors, and supportive friends that continue to guide me each step of the way. When I started Girl Talk as junior in college, I thought it would be a one-time gig, but instead has turned into my lifetime mission.
What is most fulfilling to you?
Experiencing an idea come to life! (For any entrepreneur out there, read the children’s book: “What Do You Do with an Idea?”)
What advice would you give yourself 5 years ago?
“Start before you’re ready.” As both an entrepreneur AND a perfectionist, I always used to worry about having my plans “just right” before I could move forward. Then I met a woman at a conference who heard my idea for Girl Talk, listened to me dream up all its future schemes, but cut me off before I sold myself short–“Listen, Julie…this is great idea! Don’t worry about figuring everything out before you even begin. You just need to start before you’re ready, and your dreams and plans will grow right alongside you.”
What are some of your favorite past times?
Dunking on my brothers in pool basketball. Capturing the perfect belly laugh on camera. Putting pen to paper.
Best piece of advice you received?
Invest in yourself and the people around you–take care of your core. Find a mentor you trust! Make a plan–but don’t worry if it changes.
